The Leaning Tower in the United States

Pisa AD 2014

2014 has marked two important anniversaries for Pisa: the 950th year since the first stone of the city Cathedral was laid and the 450th anniversary of the birth of Galileo Galilei.
Pisa and Tuscany want to celebrate both anniversaries by inviting American people to visit our wonderful cities and panoramic landscapes, experience our art, culture and lifestyle.
Some events have been planned to give a taste of what a traveler can find : “The Pisan Romanesque Meets Contemporary America”, is a contest for high school students. It is open to all students enrolled in public or private high schools in San Francisco, California. Schools can participate in the contest from December 2014 until March 24th, 2015.
An exposition of a miniature Leaning Tower of Pisa (about 8 feet high) at the Westfield Center in San Francisco from January 13th until February 5th 2015.
Scientific conferences on the restoration of the original Leaning Tower will be held at UC Berkeley and at the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco on 21st and 22nd January 2015.

The goal of the contest "The Pisan Romanesque meets Contemporary America" is to present the architectural and artistic heritage of Pisa in Tuscany to high school students and their teachers in San Francisco and New York City, to inspire them to study one of the most interesting and renowned examples of Italian architecture, and to stimulate their interest in art history, architecture and fine arts.
The theme of the contest, Pisan Romanesque Meets Contemporary America, challenges students to apply the features of the style that is typified by the famous Leaning Tower and the Duomo creatively to objects, paintings, buildings, gardens or the urban infrastructure that form part of their everyday experience in San Francisco and New York City and to interpret this medieval style in an original work of visual art (drawing, painting, video, mixed media).
Beginning with the Piazza del Duomo and its splendid Cathedral, Baptistery, and Leaning Tower – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Pisa around the globe – a path has been laid out in the contest web-site to explore the history, architecture, art and archeology of Tuscany and Pisa, and to encourage the interest of the younger generation in the cultural legacy of one of the most important capitals of art in Italy.
